Earth Day

Earth Day is a name used for two different observances, both held annually during spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and during autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The United Nations celebrates Earth Day -- which was founded by John McConnell in 1969 -- each year on the March equinox.

In addition, a global observance -- originated by Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, and since January 1970 also called Earth Day -- is celebrated in many countries (including the US) each year on April 22.

I don't do a whole lot but I do recycle every week. Thanks to my son for hounding me to get a recycle bin a few years ago!

I use those nifty reusable bags when I grocery shop. (Sometimes I forget and leave them in the car, but not too often anymore.)

We use these lovely energy saver light bulbs.

And every year I always plant something new in my yard. I can't do it today, my weather doesn't much permit new planting. But you can believe in a few more weeks, I'll be planting some new things!

What do you do to help promote Earth Day? I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday today!

Hi Amy!!! Hope all is well with you.

My kids are a HUGE influence on remember to recycle, and those shopping bags were a pain at first, but now, I remember them every time and I like them better than the plastic bags!

I am so bad, I haven't done anything. I didn't even know about it.
But actually all this week I have looked around and sighed, why do people throw rubbish everywhere. They are destroying nature. Makes me wanna go and pick it up

Hey Amy!

Great post. :) I am pretty fanatical about recycling and the next family vehicle will be a much more energy efficient one than we now have. Just havent gotten there yet.

You have a great Wednesday too.

Warm Regards

Morning Amy! You do a lot, anything you can do however small, is a step towards doing your part in helping the environment, especially the recycling. :) We do the same things you mentioned, I also try to buy cleaners that contain natural chemicals that won't harm the environment.

Take Care!

I do some recycling, but not as much as I did before. Before my husband and I moved I recycled as much as I could, but now I am still learning where to take the different items to. Also, I am still having a hard time trying to get my husband to recycle. I like the idea about planting something new each year, I think I am going to give that a try.

Hi Amy!

I subscribe to Al Gore's organization to promote Earth friendly products. I only use fluorescent bulbs, cloth bags, recycle when possible, try to unplug what is not being used, and try to find products made from recycled materials.

Hope you are a Green Earth Day!

Hi Amy!
I'm going to try really, really hard to be better at recycling.
I'm also going to go and take a walk with the dog in the forest we have in our back yard. I think I'll use the time to reflect and just chill. Slow down.

have a great day!

Charlotte, that sounds like a great way to spend a part of your day. I wish the weather here was more permissible to spend some time outdoors. It's too chilly for me today. But this weekend I plan to make up for it and finish cleaning up my gardens that I started the other day.

I'm so glad to hear that you all do some recycling and take some action to keep this world we live in clean and happy.

Great reminder, Amy, thank you! *hug*

I recycle, upcycle and reuse in every possible way--things around here don't get thrown out until they've literally given up the ghost (for their 9th life).

(One example are the bookcases I've made--reused landscape lumber)

Like you, I take my own bags to the grocery store, and all my light bulbs are of the energy saving variety as well. I use printer paper on both sides, reuse packing material and boxes for my own mailings, etc.

Whether it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things or not, I do my bit all the same, and hopes for the best.

Hi Amy,

Like you I don't do a whole lot. But I do recycle quite a bit and use the funky looking light bulbs.

Oh, thought I'd tell you that one of my publishers has recently gone green. NAL is now doing edis and revisions and galley's on line using the MS Word Tracking system. So, the amount of paper being saved by this company will be HUGE.

Not sure it is motivated mostly by money or eco awareness, but whatever the motivation, it's a good step!

Anna, LOL, the funky looking light bulbs!

Azteclady, if I can reuse mailing boxes I do! I save them just in case :).

Charlotte, I think that is a great thing NAL is doing online edits and revisions! I can only imagine how much paper is being wasted. I'm sure that the MS's are being recycled, but with the age of computers I see no reason not to do it online using MS Word. The online publishers have always done it that way!

You know, my husband says to me today that he doesn't know why I bother with trying to be conservative when China and other places aren't. What good is it going to do? So I asked him why he votes. What good does his one measly vote make. His reply was he likes to think that by that one vote he might be able to make a difference....EXACTLY, I said to him! My bin of recycled goods and reusing this or that and planting new plants is my way of making a difference in the little piece of the world I live in.

Will it make a difference in the grand big picture? I don't know, but like his one vote, I like to think that my part will make a difference!

Isn't it funny how the kids can be the ones to push us into something. My oldest was the one who really pushed for us to do more recycling and it's been wonderful. I've even got my hubby doing more now. :)

Happy Earth Day!

Hi Amy!!

Happy Earth Day! We are very conscious of how what we do in our every day lives can affected the earth! We live as "green" as we can...we are still learning! I did make sure I had my cloth grocery bags with me when I went to the store today and I donated money to help plant trees in many of the areas that were devastated by fires this last year!!

Nice post Amy, Earth Day should be everyday, it is good that there is at least one day to spread awareness. Here are some suggestions on what you can do to help the Earth:, you can add your own suggestions.

I wish I was in a position to plant something for Earth Day or any other day for that matter.
We are currently detoxifying our house. All of our cleaning products, bath and laundry products are toxin free. That really makes a difference in how clean the house smells!
