"Build Your Own Hero" With Amanda McIntyre! (and a Giveaway)

I've been MIA the last few days. Just takin a break, I suppose. But I have a special guest here today. And she is definitely worth coming out from the rock I've been hiding under!

Please welcome Amanda McIntyre (One of my favorite authors!) on her 24th day of her "25 Blogs in 25 days...the TORTURED tour!" She has something fun in store for you!

TORTURED, erotic medieval, Harlequin Spice, Aug.'09-Amanda McIntyre)

View book trailer here!

In a time of chaos, darkness, and violence, it is better to live only in the moment, lest your memories eat you alive.

A young woman blessed with “sight seeks vengeance against a tyrannical lord responsible for her mother's murder. Forced to become an executioner's apprentice, she encounters a Roman prisoner who offers her a way to escape her prison and find a future. Torn between desire, duty, and the chance for revenge, her choice to live or die leaves her TORTURED. (Available now, Harlequin Spice-Books Aug. '09)

I want to thank my friend, Amy, for offering me a stop at RBW on my tour! This is the next to the last day on the tour and it’s been great to hang with old friends and meet some new ones along the way. We got to talking over the weekend, about inspiration in coming up with characters. One of the questions was what do you prefer, a sharp-dressed man or the scruffy look? I wasn’t sure if this translates over into hero building, but I realized that honestly…it’s a bit of a heady thing to be able to pick and choose all the attributes of your hero—physical, social, emotional. I for one can’t think of anything more fun! ;)

So I thought it might be fun to devote a blog to “Build a hero” kind of like “build a bear!” Here’s how this will work…

I’m going to describe my fav hero, listing attributes that I find appealing.

YOU then leave your description of YOUR appealing hero in your comments!

One winner will win a copy of TORTURED. In addition, I will write a free online, short story, using the winner’s name as the heroine. I will then post it on my blog. (Word count: short, Genre: decided upon by winner and me, heat level: steamy but okay for Internet.) and the winner as well as anyone is free to post it to theirs! Okay! Ready? Here is MY dream hero:

Build: 6’2”, olive complexion, dark smoky eyes, days growth of beard, little or no chest hair, hair can be very short buzz, or a mussed up mop of curls. Well toned, broad shouldered, nice muscles—tatts optional—but not perfect, a little rough around the edges, confident in his own skin, hands that show he’s not afraid of work. Knows when to be gentle , when to take charge, respectful of women, cherishes, no, make that…worships the heroine, dry humor, intelligent, resourceful, fearless when it warrants, a shade reckless, passionate, knows how to move in a crowd, or with one person, enjoys dressing in nice clothes, as much as comfy clothes, self-reliant.

Can’t wait to read what you all come up with!

Thanks to Amy for having me today!! May the wind be at your back!

Amanda

Thank you, Amanda, for including me in your blog tour! I am honored to have you here, and with such a fun post!

I can't wait to read all of your answers as well! This sounds like a lot of fun. The hero is a very important part of a romance novel, and now's your chance to create that one who is perfect for you! AND Amanda is going to write a short story using the lucky winner's name. That is just the coolest :).

Good luck to all of you!

good morning ladies. This aught to be a lot of fun...

My hero must be taller than me, at least 6', dark hair, green eyes, clean shaven with the occasional trimmed goatee, body must be cut, little to know chest hair, absolutely NO back hair (thats just gross), body art optional. Passionate, love of the outdoors, not afraid to work, Mr. Fix it, sense of humor, respectful of women, loves children. I love my bad boys but he must also be a knight in shinning armor, not afraid to stand for what he believes in, quiet nature, hands must be gentle with a knowing of when to be a little more ummm rough. Must love the ocean!

thats all I can think of right now.

Hi Amy and Amanda,
A dream hero huh...hhhmmmm let me think:

Build: 6'4 (I like ‘em tall) teal blue eyes, ebony wavy hair falling onto muscular shoulders. He has sensuous curved lips that hardly smile and a four o'clock shadow.
He is broad chest, tapered waste, long, strong legs and a tribal tattoo covering his right shoulder. His chest is dusted with hair in a V shape and trails down in a small line to disappear in his designer jeans. He doesn’t care all that much what he wears as longs as it is of the finest quality.

He is a take charge kind of man, sometimes bordering on Neanderthal behavior. He is confident, oozes enough stamina for men to step aside and women to be immediately drawn to him. He is smart, likes to live on the dangerous side but also enjoys to read the classics in his cabin. He is rough, tough but never forgets his family or his responsibilities.

He can wine and dine a woman as well as tear the panties of her and show the very reason why she is a woman. He is merciless in business but anonymously donates to local charity and whenever he gets tired of the whole world retreats in his cabin only he knows how to find. (Until I knock on that door of course)

He is a dangerous, thrilling, brooding but charming when he wants to and in love when he gives a devilish grin that tells a woman she is in wicked trouble.

I hope this pictures you my hero.

My hero should be tall, muscular but in an athletic way rather than a body-building way. He should be very respectful of women, and find everything about his heroine, even her flaws, loveable. He should be deeply emotional (but not weepy and weak-acting), and courageous.

Good Morning Amanda and Amy:

Awesome post and question!

My hero would have to possesses a charismatic aura, the kind that inherently draws people to him. He is a leader but also gentle and kind. My guy would be at least 6 feet 2 inches, dark curly hair, has a nice hairy chest, chestnut eyes, and is ruggedly handsome and strong.

He is passionate, intense and very experienced in the ways of the flesh; he likes to be in control. He is accustomed to enjoying the company of any woman he sets his sights on. However when one comes along who requires pursuit, he enjoys the "challenge".

LOL
Thanks Amanda and Amy!
I'm looking forward to reading "Tortured".

Best

You guys are giving awesome answers!

My perfect hero? Strong, caring, compassionate. Confident and always dishes out compliments. Looks amazing in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Clean-shaven. I don't like the feel of a scruffy face. Hurts like hell! But the feel of a smooth shaven-face, ohhh, now that sends tingles to all the right spots! A fit and trim guy, doesn't have to be all muscular, just healthy.

So, if you take out the compassionate, I've just described my husband :D! HAHA!

Amanda McIntyre said...

LOL Amy...I want ask you to go into your comment about an unshaven face, "hurting like hell!"

I LOVE these answers! Ihad no idea this would so fun!! Keep 'em coming! We'll build a tribe! LOL

Oooh, my dream hero!

I want someone over 6 foot, preferable 6'2 or above. Dark hair, but surprisingly light eyes. Older than me, with the slightest hint of stubble, like he was too busy to shave that morning. He doesn't have a super muscled body, but he's firm, and you know he can get things done for you - which brings me to HANDY!! Comfortable in both jeans and a suit, and looks damn good in both. I want someone that's smart, able to carry on a conversation, make his own decisions. And of course.. needs to be sensitive enough to help me during a hard time, or maybe with tough decisions that occur in my life.

Well.. ahem. -Fans herself- I rather hope I win!
Thanks!

Amanda! You're so naughty! :P

Amanda McIntyre said...

I'll say *fanning myself* you all are amazing at this! So the questions that comes to mind..do you all "imagine" your ideal when you read? or do you fall in love with the man in the book?

HUm...Ive got to think now about the heroes I've written, vs. the heroes I've read...or watched on screen. Mr. Darcy,(Matthew MacFayden) for example--in Pride & Predjudice (I was surfing youtube last night) an unlikely hero to be sure--and yet I was mesmerized by his persona in that film. The way his breath catches when he tells her that he loves her...oh my god. swoon.

A.M.

Cecile said...

Amanda.. this would be one amazing tribe with some very hot and tall men!!! But I am game to being stuck with them!!! LOL!!!

Now on for my hero... (closing eyes to get a better picture of him)

From head to toe---
His height is between 5'10 - 6'.
His hair is dark locks of wavy, but not funky wavy hair. You know the type of hair that I can run my fingers through (especially in those bedroom moments). His eyes are the color the bluest blue.. Beach Sea Blue color, you could almost see through them, they set off his dark hair. He is an outdoor man, you can tell from the color of his skin. The sun has touched him (and again, that sets off his eyes). His mouth is the perfect shape for those delicious wicked smiles he throws my way. He has very broad shoulders. He has arms that show the strenght of the man. He could pick me up as if I were not heavier than a fly. His body is one that does not stop. His shape is that of a man that takes care of himself. Nothing like "Muscle Man," but you know that he takes care of himself. And his waist does that wonderful V shape thing... (yum-Me)! He is not to hairy, but I do like some hair.. Love the feel of it - for those skin to skin moments, lol!
He has an ass that you could bounce a quarter off of and legs so muscular and strong... they have to match the man they hold up. He has a few scars scattered on him, growing pains he would say and laugh. His hands are slightly calloused, he does work with hands... and works very well with them I might add!!! His hands could be a leathal weapon in one instance, then be as gentle as a baby's touch in another. He knows how to use what the good Lord gave him. Now that you see him....

He knows that he is the Alpha male. Strong to the core. Couragous and loyal. Those surrounding him seek to absorb his strength. He is not cocky about his qualities; he just knows what he is and thats it. He is comfortable in his own skin. He oozes confidence and pride. You can tell in his walk that he is not a man to be mess with. He can be very serious in one second and make you laugh your ass off the next. He is compassionate and loving. He loves his Omega with all his heart and soul. She possess him like no other. For when he gives of himself, he gives everything. He has a battered past that he carrys in his back pocket. It affects the way he sees the world, but he allows his Omega to "heal" those wounds - slowly. He has a heart of pure gold, but he feels that it is tarnished by his past. He has an appitete for everything. He has no problem admitting when he is wrong and no problem defending what he knows to be right. He stands by his morals and values; not to be shaken. The only thing he caves in for - is his woman! He wears a suit to tee, but oh to see him in a pair of jeans and no shirt, working outside - yumme!! He is polite and a southern gentleman, but oh in bed... he is wicked! He has a streak of bad boy in him, but the good boy in him wins *most of the time.* He knows how to make his woman feel like she is the only person in the world. He is a dangerous one, for when you fall for him... you are hook, line and sunk!!!

Amy C said...

I think of heroes differently for who they are in each book. But there are some that stand out and are more memorable.

For instance, Deamon Sadi from The Black Jewels trilogy and Sebastian from The Ephemera duology and then there is your own Thomas Rodin. It's their personalities that make them memorable. They seem like the kind of man that would never fail to make you laugh and feel good about yourself. Laughter is the key. And that is one thing that I love about my husband, he never fails to make me laugh! Even when I don't want to. And I imagine those three characters to be the same way.

Cecile said...

If the man is described very well... I will fall in love with the man in the book. Only minor details do I change. Like... I don't like long hair on a man, so I will skim over that and replace it with my thoughts. But if the author can make him "beleivible & real" to me... then I will fall for him. And there have been quiet a few that I have fallen head over heels in love with.
This has been so much fun!!!!
Thanks Amy for having Amanda here today!!! I hope you all have a great day!! I know after reading this, I sure will!!! lol!!!

Amy C said...

Oh wow, Cecile! That's one heck of a man. I'm especially drawn to the jeans with no shirt as he labors outdoors!

Patti said...

What a great question! My ideal man: 6'4" or so, broad shoulders and tattoos. Great smile. Not particular about hair color, although short is preferable to longer. Must be polite - holds doors for ladies, etc. Is smart but doesn't disregard other's opinions and/or experiences.

If the hero in the story is written in detail I usually envision them as (hopefully) the author intended. If it's a bit vague, I use my imagination.

Cecile said...

Oh Amy... You should see him in my mind when he does "labor" outside!!! I am drool just imaging him right now.... Damn he is sexy... I am hoping that was understood too... He oozes (i am so loving this word today) and I mean completely oozes SEX!!! It would go without saying that he is MY SEX ON A STICK kinda of mna!!!! Delicious to the core!!!!

Mandi said...

This is fun!!

My hero - 6'2, muscular, not too skinny. Darker hair, DEFINITE scruff on his face, chest hair of course. Makes me laugh every single day.
Good in bed.

Blodeuedd said...

Fun :D

Hm I am always lost when it comes to feet, since I am 5,7 then not that much taller than me. I like to like my man in the eyes.

Black hair (some curls, tiny ones), piercing green eyes. Oh and he has to wear a kilt, and have a big sword, and by that I actually mean a sword ;)

He is kind, gentle, would love me beyond words, and tear the world apart if something happened to me. he can be tough, alpha, and at the same time a teddybear.

Amanda McIntyre said...

Cecile...I think you should be an authors data bank for hero creation LOL
I love all these descriptions and I find it amazing how many are very much alike! Just a few variations, but isn't that cool? Do we all have such amazing taste, or what?? ;))

I had a scene once in a book--a sedcution scene actually of a man mowing (yes mowing without his shirt) and he comes into the kitchen to get a drink of water and lets just say things get interesting...;)
sometimes the most simple moments can be so erotic!

like a jell-0 sccene I have in that same book, now that I think of it...

thanks Cecile for stopping by! I knew you would have a few thoughtson this game!

Amys says:It's their personalities that make them memorable.>>>>

So true! When I was writing TORTURED, my hero Dryston, in my mind, started out as this very dark eyed, dark skinned guy--but as I wrote the book, the vision of his sea grey green eyes and kind of brownish blonde hair took over--
in the synopsis Im writing for a proposal, I had my Italian stone carver with dark curly locks, now Im seeing him with very short hair that accentuates his seductive face and chisled looks--
weird how that happens...

but I do think its their personalities, that ultimately draw us in deeper--I know it is for me..
good point ,Amy -sort of makes the luscious outside like icing on the cake!

Amanda... anytime... If you give me something to think of... I will try my hardest to provide you with something... Especially where men are concerned!! =)

I do agree with you about us looking for the "same" type of man. In different ways, but the same. We want that man to defend us no matter what. We want him to WANT us no matter what. In the end, we just want our man to be simply... our man!

Oh, honey... mowing the grass without a shirt on... how delicious that would be... He is hot and sweaty already... Why not add fuel to the fire... Damn... I need to know what book this is from!!! Going get it!!!

You have my premission to use my "Sex on a Stick" pharse!! That is my fave description to use!! Especailly when I review my books and think of my hero... It comes to mind.. Imagine having him on a stick and he was all sorts of incredible, wicked things.. what would you do with him on a stick!!! Sex on a Stick!

My Hero:

• 6' plus (I'm 5'10" - he's gotta be taller than me in heels)
• Dark short hair with just a suggestion of curl at the temples and red highlights in the sun
• Green eyes (my favorite color) that change color with emotion
• Well built but not muscle-bound
• Crooked smile
• Intricate tattoos/piercings with personal meaning, easily hidden
• Dry sarcasm & dirty humor
• Intelligence to match/challenge the heroine
• Highly creative sex drive
• No facial hair & clean shaven everywhere!
• Artistic but afraid of it

I could go on and on! LOL

:)

Wow, that description is the stuff of fantasies, isn't it! lol!

With picturing everybody’s man the temperature in front of my pc definitely has risen *fans self* But to answer your question Amanda, I never insert my own desires to a hero, if the author does the job; character plus looks = invading my imagination.

I do have a preference for the dark, brooding bad boy who ultimately does the right thing.

Tracy said...

omg Charlotte just made me laugh really hard! The fingers like sausages just sent me over the edge! lmao!

Amanda what a fun post! I love reading about hero descriptions in books and when the descriptions are minimal I feel like I don't have the whole person in my head - which sucks! lol

Ok - my guy:

*6'3" (I couldn't decide between 6'2 and 6'4" so I met in the middle!)
*Dark hair - about shoulder length
*light blue eyes
*skin color doesn't really matter - well, they can't be pasty - that's just wrong. On second thought if they were a vamp and hadn't seen sun for a while...oh wait, I'm getting side tracked!
*muscular but not too bulky
*tattoos preferable - nipple piercings ok. :)
*Likes to wear low slung jeans and looks damn good in them because he has such a nice ass. But isn't afraid to put on a suit when the occasion calls for it.
*Has a great sense of humor and can laugh at himself.
*Sarcasm required
*Intelligent. Has book smarts as well as common sense.
*Works hard.
*family man
*A beta with some alpha tendencies.

Ahhh - I can see him now. K - I'm gonna go drool now. :)

Cecile, I think you stole my hunky hero. You had me at "ass". My heart was racing, I wriggled in my chair, my eyes dilated in excitement as you were describing his scrumptious derriere. Just give him back when you're done.

Amanda, just dropped in to say "hi" and loving your tour. This was a fun game today and I enjoyed everyone's imagination. Include me in the party when we get the tribe together.

My hero would have to be as tall as Hugh Jackman, with a deep sexy voice like Sean Connery, Paul Newman blue eyes, and a John Wayne sense of honor. I want him to be playful as Brad Pitt, with a physique like The Rock, and a sparlke in his eye like George Clooney. Wow, that would be such a challenge but worthwhile to accept.

It is funny how in a sence we are describing the "same" kind of guy... just with variations here and there. This is one freaking hot tribe we are building here... I think my computer is catching on fire with all these hot men in the room!!!

Some must be camando... because the jeans are ultra low... some have boxers... you can tell... and hell, I even see some with klits on... you know those are camando!!!

Pass that popcorn girl... the show is getting good...

How does a guys hands factor in to the whole hero package for you??

Tracy said...

or an alpha with secret vulnerabilities and scars...

For me as long as they're not TOO alpha then I'm good with the above statement. I mean I love an alpha hero as much as the next woman but I wouldn't want one that's too overbearing in RL.

Hands - I love hands. I can't imagine a tall lovely man with short stubby fingers...it just wouldn't work for me.

Cecile said...

Okay... I am back... It was a teaser... =)

We are onto hands now...
Hands are like the signature of the guy. I learned that there is a lot in a handshake with a person. And even though I am a woman, I do love to shake hands with a person. I love a strong, firm hand shake. Means the person is confident in themselves, strong and determined. I give just as good as I get.
I agree with Tracy, "... can't imagine a tall lovely man with short stubby fingers...it just wouldn't work for me."

Long fingers, calloused hands, smooth skin, well manicured hands, rough skin... all mean to tell us about the person. I am weird like that, I pay attention when the author tells me about the character, especially their hands.

Charlotte Featherstone said...

Wow, there's a LOT of estrogen floating around here...I smelt the pheremones all the way from the Great White North.

I think I will leave the gnome to you and Amy...
My inner hussy fantasy is going to stay at the 5'10"- 6' tall man...
In real life, my alpha man is 5'3"!! I am 5'6"... So, my real life hero is my gnome!! With sausage fingers!! He is a very short & stocky guy!!! LOL!!!

Amy C said...

We all need some lovin'...Even the Gnomes!

What about elves? You know, they are pretty hot in The Lord of the Rings!

Speaking of hands, I love hands. Fingertips! Fingertip touching is spine-tingling, bone-melting, and extremely relaxing!

Cecile said...

I agree Amy... even Gnomes need lovin too!!! =)
Now elves... see, I have never watched The Lord of The Rings. Hubby has all the dvd's. Guess I have a lot to catch up on...
I will have to see that!
I just never envision an elf as hot... but who knows!

Now, I do love when they put in books, like that he touch the small of her with his fingers and she felt like she was on fire... or something like that. I love when they make use of the hands, but tell us about it... Finger touching, hand touching... is all part of the erotic side... Basic human touch is all we need to start the fire!!!

You don't need to enter me, cause I already have a copy of Tortured, but here's my answer to the question. :)

My hero would be taller than me(which isn't hard to accomplish since I'm short), muscular with dark hair.(not that blond's are bad. Just look at the Viking Eric on True Blood-yummy) A nice ass (cause you need something to squeeze). Confident, funny, compassionate, a take charge kinda guy.

Thanks Anna for stopping by with your hero vision! Even though you have a copy of Tortured (thank you!) you can still enter the part of the story contest!

We do seem to be getting a fair amount of arse preferences on this blog today...

have you guys seen the Gods of Football calendar( I know, I know , Im a broken record-sue me! Its for a good cause and sooo easy on the eyes) Google it, you'll be glad you did! And then watch Lust in Time for a bash where you can win one of these! But I digress...

Charlotte says:
innate sensuality of the gnome!>>>
Uh huh...as tempting as it would be to include this in my free story (and I may yet)..I have to wonder why you seem to be spending so much time in your neighbors yard, eh?

Oh, I sooooo want a copy of this book! Amanda you're fantastic!!!!
Ok, onto my description- my hero has to be tall, dark and handsome- I know cliche' but I can'thelp it! lol, he would have brown- almost black eyes, muscles in all the right places, sporting a year round natural tan- but he wouldn't be perfect. He might have a scar, or some other imperfection. So, when I think of my hero he kind of looks like Criss Angel from Mind freak. Not at all perfect but YUMMY beyond compare! But he has to be totally unaware of his affects on the opposite sex. He'd have to have a naughty sense of humor, but be respectable of women. He'd have a gentle touch, with a strong desire to nurture and protect- and of course he would be ever so brave! Completely willing to lay down his life for the one's he loves. :O) Ahhhhhhh, where is he??????
