Gail Dayton - Heart's Blood

Heart's Blood

I love when I have high expectations for a book, and when I finally read it, it's as good if not better than what I had hoped for. And that was the case with Heart's Blood.

Grey Carteret, magister of the conjurer's guild, the most powerful conjurer in all of England, awakens face down in a stinky gutter, feeling as though his entire body has been badly beaten. The voice of a young lad interrupts his confused thoughts, claiming he's watched over him through the night, protecting him with his magic.

It doesn't take long before it's revealed that the lad named Parkin, is actually a young woman, Pearl Parkin. You see, she wants Mr. Carteret to apprentice her. As Grey adamantly denies Pearl, a commotion catches their attention. A murder has been discovered. The next thing Grey knows, he's being arrested for said murder. Determined to become Grey's apprentice, Pearl blackmails Grey into accepting her as his apprentice.

Amidst trying to solve the mysterious murders, a friendship forms between Grey and Pearl, along with a yearning for contact from the other that neither of them can explain...Another mystery to be solved. The romance between Grey and Pearl was slow, yet a burning build between them. The simplicity of it really impacted me; the holding of hands. Grey, without thought, licking the blood from Pearl's finger when it was necessary for her to draw blood for her magic. It all blended so amazingly well with the mysterious murder plot and the further explorations of the Dead Zones.

This is one of those series I find myself craving more of. I can't think of one single fault with this series. It's a unique, vivid world with amazing characters...A true magical Keeper!

*raises hand* Me, me, me. I have this author on the radar since I read Elizabeth Vaughan but never bought a book from her hand :)

I just love it that a book lives up to all you expect it and perhaps a bit more. May I win or not...I think this novel will be bought this month *grin*

Great review! Isn't it nice to read about simple romance these days? To remind yourself of simple acts of love and that everything isn't about sex (don't get me wrong, I don't mind sex scenes but it's really good to read something else, too).
Thanks for the giveaway, count me in please :)

Oh yes, please, pretty please!

I have been coveting this book for ages--though I confess I don't know how it has so far escaped my greedy clutches *scratches head*--so I'd love to get it!

Happy Monday, Amy!

Hi Leontine!
I like your thinking! I can't imagine you being disappointed with this series :).

Hi Host,
I couldn't agree with you more. While I love the books that start off with a lustful bang, I think I gravitate more to the ones that build slowly.

Azteclady! You've begged so sweetly, I'll toss your name in the old hat!

Hey Blodeuedd,
That's kinda funny that I introduced you to Steampunk and I really have only read one other book that was labeled in that genre. This series has the little machine creatures in the Dead Zones, however the magical world is definitely more prevalent. And it is really good! I do have another steampunk book on the shelf to read, and I'm looking forward to it too :).

Amy, I would LOVE to win your extra copy of the first book! I have been curious about New Blood since you reviewed it a while back and never got around to ordering it for myself. I haven't seen it at the bookstore, either. You never go wrong with your book recommendations... I know I'll love it!

Thanks for the chance!

Great review!!! I've heard a lot about New Blood but I haven't had a chance to read it yet - don't know how I missed it - but I did. I'm glad to see Heart's Blood is getting some really great reviews as well. A lot of the time, I fall in love with the first book in any series and after that I can't quite catch the magic that was found in the first. Someone earlier mentioned Elizabeth Vaughan and I agree - I've read her Borderlands triology 3 times already! annhonATaolDOTcom
