R.A. Salvatore - Sojourn: The Legend of Drizzt Book III

Sojourn
The Legend of Drizzt Book Three

by R.A. Salvatore

Drizzt Do'Urden is an enigma of his race of Dark Elves. He carries inside him a conscience. Something that none of his people can claim, even his father Zaknafein, but at least he knew the things he did were evil and vile. He hoped that in his son, Drizzt, he could make right his wrongs, and amazingly enough, he did. He instilled in the few short years he had in training him in the art of weaponry and fighting, morals and to think for himself, rationalize and know right from wrong. But in so doing, Zaknafein's tutelage sentenced Drizzt to a very lonely solitary existence. For having a conscience within the drow society is a death sentence.

In book one of The Dark Elf trilogy, Drizzt is born, and as he grows he sees how disturbing and cruel his people are and eventually it's his death they want. In book two, Drizzt is alone and on his own with his panther companion. They travel the tunnels of the underdark alone, until he makes a few unusual friendships. But Drizzt soon realizes that there is nowhere he can go to escape the wrath of his family. The underworld is no longer his home. Drizzt heads to the above world, a place he's only seen once, and under terrible circumstances.

For months Drizzt watches from his cave home. And one day he spies a farm and the family that occupies it. He wants what he sees. The teasing, the rough-housing, the friendships. The love. But it would seem that Drizzt is not destined for those things yet. Oh and how badly I felt Drizzt's longing to belong. To find a place in this new world, but due to his dark elf appearance (because really in all other aspects of the drow, Drizzt is nothing like them), he is condemned and hunted. His people are feared in the above world, and all the humans and other creatures see is the terror and violence and hatred that the Dark Elves have created with their behavior.

"If only he could find acceptance among those who so hated-as he himself hated-the ways of his dark people, then Drizzt Do'Urden would be at peace." Sojourn, 1991~

Throughout the course of this trilogy, Drizzt has became an exceedingly vivid and amazing character. He has faults, but he stands for all that is good. He is brave. He is strong. He wants acceptance and to be at peace within himself and with the above world inhabitants. Drizzt has become one of my favorite characters. I loved reading about his trials as he journeys in search of a place to call home through the wide world of pain and joy, so says the wise old blind ranger. The trilogy eneded on a happy note, after so much fighting and death.

This first trilogy in the Legend of Drizzt may have come to an end, but I have the next three boxed sets to get lost in. And get lost in I plan on doing over the course of the year!

Thanks again, Donna, for such a fabulous recommendation!

Lusting For Covers

Lusting for Covers
is a weekly meme, held on Sunday, that allows
bloggers to share their current cover obsession with fellow book lovers.
Meme hosted by the lovely Book Queen over at The Book Queen's Palace! Head on over and check it out!

This weeks Lusting For Covers is Janet Chapman's Tempt me If You Can. Umm, I'm thinking he's doing a darn fine job tempting me :)! And I love the way the sunset appears.

This is book two in Janet's Sinclair Brothers series. I simply love her books. She writes those wonderful feel good kinds, that just mesh with me. I've yet to read one I did not love, and there are only two of her's I still don't have! I ask myself how that is even possible. Tempt Me If You Can releases on February 2nd! You know, I'm trying not to buy books, but some I just can't pass up on!

HE'LL PLAY BY HER RULES UNTIL SHE FALLS FOR HIM...
HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER.

When an anonymous letter stuns shipping magnate and confirmed bachelor Ben Sinclair with the news that he has a teenage son, he's determined to make good on the past. But Emma Sands doesn't trust him. The beautiful, fiery blonde has raised her nephew in the peaceful woods of Maine since he was five, and just because fifteen-year-old Michael is the spitting image of his tall, handsome father doesn't give Ben the right to march in and change their lives forever. Or so she thinks, until his return mysteriously unearths a dangerous small-town secret. With Michael's help, Ben will do whatever it takes to prove to fiercely independent Emma that he can be the fearless protector she never knew she wanted...and the passionate lover she always thought she could resist.

Happy Saturday!

It's a beautiful, gorgeous day out on this fine Saturday! It's not too often we get sunny days in the 40's and it's not windy this time of year! So Devin and I took a drive up to the Galleria Mall for lunch. We ended up leaving with a full belly AND a new dog! Yup, I let Devin get another dog. He was just born today and his name is Kyle. He's a soft and cuddly Dalmatian :).

Devin asks me everytime we go to the Galleria Mall if he can get another Build-a-Bear and I always tell him no. I don't know, today I decided to let him. He loves stuffed animals. Has a ton of them all over his bed! It's one of those comfort things. He's so into the action and fighting games for his x-box and the internet that it's nice to see him get mellow for a time as he welcomes his new friends to the house!

The other puppy dog is Devin's first Build-a-Bear friend. His name is Scrappy! That one I let him pick out an outfit, but as you can see, he is no longer wearing it, so I did not let him get an outfit this time. I think they are so darn cute. There is a wolf that I would like to get for my book room. I think there may have been a dragon one time we stopped in to browse. There is also a little tote bag you can get. I thought how fun would it be to have one, get a tote and stick a book inside and have him sit among my books! LOL. I don't know, maybe next time we go I'll get me one too!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One other thing I thought I'd share. Devin is always begging me to experiment with deserts. But I don't like to do much baking. The other day I finally told him that if he wanted to, HE could! So he did! And surprisingly enough, he did a fantabulous job! He used a Red Velvet cake and added some peanut butter and marshmallows! And he made the WHOLE thing ALONE! I only went in the kitchen to check on him and this is what I spied!
The end result?
Fantastic!
The cake had just the right amount of peanut butter. I've never had a cake with peanut butter before. And the great thing about it...Devin likes it too! He's so dang picky!
I hope you all are having a fabulous weekend!
A Tearful and Heartfelt THANK YOU!
I am still trying to come down off this exhilarating high that overcame me yesterday after I checked my mail. The Guernsey book has made it's way back to me, and what a truly amazing thing it is. From the entirety of my heart I thank all of you who read it. This book is a treasure that I will hold near and dear to me always, as it reminds me of all the people I have met and the friends I have made because of that one common interest...Books!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The 'Journey' isn't quite over yet. There are still four people left on the list, well actually six. I recruited my neighbor yesterday :) and I still have a friend who I've been taking her my books to read for several years now, she just doesn't know it yet :). I needed the book to make a pit-stop so that I could show the ladies at Borders before the store closes in a week and a half :(. I'm sure going to miss that store and the people that work there.
It's amazing to me how far this book has traveled and where it still is going to travel...from New York to Finland. New Jersey to Louisiana. Minnesota to Canada. California. And it's about ready to make another trip across the ocean to Norway then Ireland! Then back to Illinois and New Jersey!
You guys are amazing and awesome and wonderful! And I feel like the luckiest darn person in the world!
Thank you again for being part of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book journey!
What's Your Wallpaper?
Last year fellow blogger Kristie J started a chain of posts showing what's your wallpaper and I thought to do another post and share what's on my desktop, as well as share this beautiful cover and talk about the book. You see, Amanda McIntyre mentioned on her blog that she has a new wallpaper for her upcoming release of The Master and The Muses. So naturally I had to have it. Now I have this amazing cover to ogle all day :), and well, to be ogled! Just look at those eyes? Intense and captivating! Just like the character he portrays...Thomas Rodin. And then I love how her nakedness erotically contrasts his fully clothed state. Definitely a cover to get lost in!
Thomas Rodin first captured my heart in Diary of Cozette. He's a young artist. Very intense, very passionate about his art. And he's not afraid to use the desires of the flesh to create his paintings. He's an eccentric, breaking all the rules and mastering his craft in the process.
The Master and The Muses
Amanda McIntyre
Coming June 2010 from Harlequin Spice!
They are his inspiration.
He is their obsession.
Icon, rebel, unabashed romantic… with a single look painter Thomas Rodin conveys the ecstasy of creativity—the pleasures awaiting the woman who can fuel his artistry.
the Innocent
What did this master artist see in me? Genius abided in his soul, rapture in his flesh—I doubted not. To refuse him…my folly. To surrender…my sensual salvation.
the Upstart
I chafed at the bonds of servitude until he set me free. I turned my back on all that I knew to follow him and found myself between two men—master and student—one whom I loved with my heart...the other with my body.
the Courtesan
I understood, perhaps better than any, his needs.
I stoked the fires of his soul, the spark of his creativity— he made me a legend. But never could I forget his searing touch.…
Three transcendent tales of women bewitched by a master of seduction— a slave as much to his art as to his boundless passion.
So what's your wallpaper?
Some Poetry to Pass the Time
Today at work I decided to try my hand at some poetry. I did a Haiku, a Limerick and just a rhyming one :). It helped pass the time. Lord knows I have nothing but time. It's so darn slow, I have to find something to do. I've never really done poetry before, but I do like that second one. Wrote it for my husband :). I just thought I'd share them.
~~~~~~~~~

Midnight in the moonlight,
Warmth of Summer caressing flesh,
Desires fulfilled.

~~~~~~~~~
Hands on flesh,
a gentle caress.
Heartbeats pound,
from desires all around.
Breaths mingle,
creating a delicious tingle.
A whispered phrase,
passes through the haze...
I'll love you for all of my days!
~~~~~~~~~

Bodies dance to the music of desire.
The sight is one that will surely inspire,
the need to help you
turn your balls from blue,
Because inside I'm consumed by fire!

~~~~~~~~~
So what do ya think? Should I throw in the towel and just give up? :P I gotta say, though, that I'm pretty darn proud of myself :)!
Happy Tuesday to you!
Strange Reasons To Buy A Book...
That's what I'd like to know! What is the strangest reason you've bought a book?
You see, last week while browsing the romance books with my mom, I spotted a book I hadn't seen before by Kay Hooper. As many times as I've gone through those books at my Borders, I was surprised that I had never noticed it. The title of the book just so happens to be my first name. A lot of you don't know this, but my real name is Amanda (My mom thought Amy was a nickname. So I've been called that my whole life. If has caused some confusion over the years!)
Anyway, I pulled the book down and called my mom over to show her. I was considering buying the book just for the title, but what sealed the deal was when I opened to the first page and the date the prologue took place in was none other than the year I was born! Dude, is that not a coincidence or what?? Me and my mom got a good laugh out of that. Needless to say, I had to buy the book and there happened to be two copies, so my mom bought the other one.
I didn't even read the blurb to see what the book was about. I thought, even if I don't read it, I still have to have it! But I did read what another author had to say about the book on the back cover, and had to laugh all over again..."Amanda seethes and sizzles." Ha! Yup, that book had to come home with me :).
Someday I imagine I'll read it!
I've actually done this one other time due to an author's last name, Sharie Kohler (Sophie Jordan). Kohler happens to be my maiden name :). And again, my mom bought the book too! I did read that one, and I liked it too. And I even met the lovely lady at the RT signing in Pittsburgh.
So, what's the strangest reason you've felt compelled to buy a book?
Diana Pharaoh Francis - The Turning TIde
The Turning Tide
by Diana Pharaoh Francis
Crosspointe Chronicles Book Three
May, 2009
They were the best of friends: Ryland, the son of the king, is bound by loyalty. Shaye is both a majicar and a Weverton, both rebellious factions. Fairlie, a fiery metal-smith, is the iron bond that held them all together. Until now.
Crosspointe’s greatest advantage at sea is its ship’s compasses—but the compass makers are dying. Without them, Crosspointe will fall. To save his country and repel the coming Jutras invasion, the king orders Ryland to commit an unforgivable act. And soon Ryland, Shaye, and Fairlie find themselves at war…with each other.
www.DianaPFrancis.com
As King William of Crosspointe secretly prepares for the immanent war with the Jutras (we learn a little of these preparations in The Black Ship), King William issues a task for his son Ryland. A most heinous task that will devastate the trust he has with his best friends, Fairlie and Shaye. Ryland is torn between his loyalties to his friends and his loyalty to his father. Sadly Ryland's obligations lie with the king, no matter that this incident will tear him apart.
But what the completion of this task creates is something that no one would have ever predicted. It proves just how powerful love is. The king may have thought he was doing the right thing for Crosspointe, even if the deed is a horrendous one, but he never expected that deed to create something so powerful and frightening beyond anything ever known.
I was captivated from page one of The Turning Tide. The story starts off establishing the relationships between Fairlie, Shaye and Ryland. You get a strong sense of how close they are, and even learn that Shaye and Fairlie love each other. But shortly after Shaye reveals his love and Fairlie realizes that she returns that love, that tragic, yet amazing incident occurs. And wow, what a moment of reading that was for me. Intense. Engaging. Tear-inducing! I thought, yes, this is it! This is why I love reading. To have moments that just grab hold and suck you in, with either tears or laughter.
When I first read The Cipher, I must admit that the world confused me some with the magical substance found in the waters of the Inland Sea called sylveth, and its uses and the majick created from it, and the ciphers, but as I read, it became more intriguing, and of course more understandable. I think this third installment in the Crosspointe Chronicles is an amazing addition. Each book adds something new, expanding the world, further enhancing the already vivid details. The sylveth adds such a unique spin on this magical world, something so terribly feared, is also the secret that keeps Crosspointe safe. And we learn so much more about sylveth, shedding a whole new light on the majickal substance.
Encompassing the pages of The Turning Tide is another fascinating and compelling spawn-filled tale of politics, friendship, love and a whole lot of betrayal! I am eager to read The Hollow Crown to see how the incidents in The Turning Tide affect Crosspointe and its people. The Turning Tide is an apt title, for the tides were most certainly turned!
And luckily, The Hollow Crown is set to release in June, 2010! Not too long of a wait.
Thank you, Diana!
A New Fantasy Trilogy by Alison Sinclair! And the thoughtfulness of my Child!
It's always so exciting discovering new authors and especially those that write in my preferred genre--Fantasy. Dottie posted a couple of books she's looking forward to this year and one of them was Lightborn by Alison Sinclair. I did a little browsing, exploring the book some more and found that it's book two in a trilogy. The first book is Darkborn, which released in May 2009. And the third book releases in 2011, Shadowborn.
I was a little disappointed at first because the books are in trade size, and I have to be conservative with my book buying. But then I remembered a gift that my son gave me a few weeks ago! You see, he signed up with swagbucks. Not sure how it works, but he browses the internet through swagbucks and gains swag bucks. And when he earned enough he traded them in for an amazon gift card for 5 dollars for me! So thoughtful of him! So I redeemed my $5 this morning and bought the first book, Darkborn. And the great thing, it's Bargain priced! So I think I made out pretty good with the the help of my child! Sometimes it happens. Devin will surprise me with a kind gesture. It doesn't happen frequently so when it does, I get all warm inside and proud. Of course, I'm always proud of him, but it's nice to see him think of someone else other than himself, you know?
Darkborn
2009
"A new romantic fantasy of magic, manners, and espionage that is also a fast-paced thriller" (Carol Berg).
For the Darkborn, sunlight kills. For the Lightborn, darkness is fatal. Living under a centuries-old curse, the Darkborn and the Lightborn share the city of Minhorne, coexisting in an uneasy equilibrium but never interacting. When Darkborn physician Balthasar Hearne finds a pregnant fugitive on his doorstep just before sunrise, he has no choice but to take her in. Tercelle Amberley's betrothed is a powerful Darkborn nobleman, but her illicit lover came to her through the daytime. When she gives birth to twin boys, they can see, something unheard of among the Darkborn. When men come for the boys, Balthasar is saved by the intervention of his Lightborn neighbor-and healed by the hands of his wife, Telmaine. Soon he finds himself drawn deeper into political intrigue and magical attacks, while Telmaine must confront a power she can no longer keep sheathed in gloves, a power she neither wants nor can control.
Lightborn
May 5, 2010
The Darkborn aristocracy has rejected magic, viewing the pursuit of science as the only worthy goal. But Lady Telmaine Hearne does not have that luxury. She has kept her own powers secret, fearful of being ruined in society… until her husband Balthasar draws her into a conspiracy to protect the archduke and his brother against a magical enemy. But who will protect them from her?
Shadowborn
Coming in 2011
